Orlando Franchise Has UFL Dibs On Vick

NFL Pro Bowl - AFC-NFC Practice

Posted by Mike Florio

The UFL has sent mixed signals over the past year regarding its potential interest in quarterback Mike Vick.  Initially, Commissioner Michael Huyghue was gung-ho on the possibility.  He subsequently cooled on the proposition.

But now the pendulum has swung back in the pro-Vick direction, possibly due to the general sense that public opinion favors giving Vick a second chance, despite his guilty plea to federal felony charges of conspiracy to engage in interstate gambling and interstate dogfighting, and his subsequent 21-month prison term.

“One of the things that is important in our premiere season is to showcase the quality of talent and the coaches, and to be able to show outstanding players who find themselves in this quagmire the NFL creates,” Huyghue recently told the Associated Press.  “Michael Vick might be that kind of player because he is . . . a phenomenal talent, but he needs transitionining back into the NFL.

“Also gaining as much widespread exposure for the league as possible might be addressed with Michael Vick.”  More – ProFootballTalk.com

Florida Marlins unsure when Alfredo Amezaga will return; team signs reliever Luis Ayala

MLB: APR 19 Marlins at Nationals

By CARLOS FRÍAS

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

MIAMI GARDENS — Only time, and not surgery, will determine when Marlins utility player Alfredo Amezaga will return to the team.

A bone bruise in his left knee will not require surgery, only rest, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said today after Amezaga saw a knee specialist in Vail, Colo., on Thursday. However, there is no timetable for his return or even for when he will return to baseball activities.

Amezaga got a second opinion from Dr. Richard Steadman, a knee specialist who is renown for his work with professional athletes as diverse as NBA standout Kobe Bryant and Olympic gold-medal skier Picabo Street.

“We knew going in, this would be a long-term thing,” Gonzalez said. “Bone bruises are that kind of deal.”

Amezaga has been out since May 17 and has been dealing with pain in the knee since before the season, when he was forced to leave Mexico’s team during the World Baseball Classic with what was then thought to be a strained left knee.

Relief coming: The Marlins bullpen may be getting some help as early as next week’s series against Arizona.

Gonzalez said pitcher Kiko Calero, on the DL since June 21 with right shoulder inflammation, will pitch one inning Saturday in Jupiter, another Monday, and may join the team in Arizona, if all goes well.  More – PalmBeachPost.com

Report: Portland Lands Hedo

Finals

By Tom Ziller

Henry Abbott of TrueHoop is reporting that the Blazers have landed top free agent Hedo Turkoglu for the princely sum of $50 million (or more over five years. Hedo had been the expected target of Portland’s largess before the Magic acquired Vince Carter. That move made this move rather logical from every perspective.

… well, except the perspective that it’s unclear exactly why Portland needs a ball-dominant small forward. After all, the Blazers do have one Brandon Roy, eternal All-Star, under contract. And with Roy dominating the ball this season, the Blazers finished with the league’s finest offense. In terms of offense, this is a bit like the Lakers adding Ron Artest: sounds good on the surface, but when you look at the details, you get a bit worried.  More – Fanhouse.com

UF president wants to see less booze on UF-UGa weekend

Florida president tells mayor he wants to see less booze at event.

By David Hunt

City officials are sketching out plans to make this year’s Florida-Georgia game weekend safer after the University of Florida’s president said he remains concerned about binge drinking at the event.

Mayor John Peyton met with university President J. Bernard Machen earlier this week after Machen sent a letter saying he’d like to see less booze and a greater city investment in the Sideline Safety Zone program.

After student deaths in 2004 and 2005, university and city officials created the safety zones to try to curb alcohol abuse.

The safety zone program started, in part, to combat symptoms of the event’s nickname, “the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party.” The program provides areas where students can find assistance, ranging from basic medical help, first aid and water or to rendezvous with friends. While the safety zones helped at least 333 people during the weekend of last year’s game, Machen said he witnessed a rescue crew rush an underage girl to the hospital when she passed out drunk before noon on the day of the game.

“Despite these efforts … the two common denominators that contributed to the death of the two students have not been remedied,” Machen’s letter read.

The Times-Union obtained a copy of the letter Thursday. Machen made a list of requests, including:

- A 50 percent reduction in the number of alcohol distribution points while prohibiting shot sales at The Jacksonville Landing.  More – Jacksonville.com

Tampa Bay Rays’ 1-2 punch of B.J. Upton and Crawford is finding its mark

MLB: MAY 17 Indians at Rays

By Joe Smith, Times Staff Writer

ARLINGTON, Texas — Rays bench coach Dave Martinez played with the speedy duo of Marquis Grissom and Delino DeShields when they wreaked havoc atop the Montreal Expos batting order in the early 1990s.

Martinez also got a close look at the Cardinals’ All-Star 1-2 punch of Vince Coleman and Willie McGee as an opponent.

But when Martinez tries to compare them to the dynamic duo of B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford, the coach said the Rays tandem offers more, with a blend of speed and power that has no peer in today’s game.

“B.J. and C.C. bring a lot more to the table because of their power,” Martinez said. “Not only can they steal, they can drive the ball, drive in runs. I was trying to think the other day of two guys atop the order like that right now, and you can’t find any.

“At the end of the year, both could end up with 20 homers and steal 60-70 bases.”

With Upton heating up in the leadoff spot after a slow start due to offseason shoulder surgery and Crawford arguably playing better than he ever has in a Rays uniform, the two are turning into the catalysts manager Joe Maddon envisioned when he paired them to start this season.

“They bring that unique ability to the top of the order,” ESPN analyst and Hall of Famer Joe Morgan said. “And no other team has that.”  More – TampaBay.com

Bucs Beat: Rookie not only ones with something to prove

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Atlanta Falcons

By ANWAR RICHARDSON | The Tampa Tribune

TAMPA – There will be two basic elements to Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and coaches this season.

A chip on their shoulders and something to prove.

The chip comes from the criticism Tampa Bay has received this offseason. Some seem to believe first year coach Raheem Morris will coach no better than Goldie Hawn in Wildcats, while general manager Mark Dominik’s moves have been questioned more than a South Carolina governor returning from a trip to Argentina.

There are also players with more to prove than Sarah Palin in a geography competition. Whether his name is Luke McCown or Marshall McDuffie, every player has something to prove when training camp begins on August 1.

Of course, some have more to prove than others. Here are six players who have a lot to demonstrate going into this season:

DEFENSE

Ronde Barber, CB – Barber is boycotting the media for its criticism of him last season, and questions about why he was retained this offseason when linebacker Derrick Brooks was released. This year, if Barber can defend receivers better than he did Chicago’s Brandon Lloyd or Kansas City quarterback Tyler Thigpen, or tackle better than his attempt to bring down Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart on Monday Night Football, handling the media will be his easiest task.

Stylez G. White, DE – Stylez “Robbie Maddison” White survived his motorcycle accident this summer, but needs to start putting quarterbacks on the ground. White had eight sacks in 2007 and seemed to be a Disney movie in the making – former Arena Football League standout succeeds in the NFL. After recording 3.5 sacks in Tampa Bay’s first three games last season, White recorded only 1.5 more in 13 games. He might be the team’s best pass rusher, but has to start playing that way.

Sabby Piscitelli, S – He was a second-round pick in 2007, but was outplayed early and lost a possible starting job to fourth-round pick Tanard Jackson before finishing the season on injured reserve. Piscitelli has sustained unfortunate injuries the past two seasons, plus struggled at times when he was on the field. Morris moved Jermaine Phillips to linebacker and has handed Piscitelli the starting job, but Piscitelli still has to validate the move.

OFFENSE

Antonio Bryant, WR – After 83 receptions for 1,248 yards and seven touchdowns, nobody can question Bryant’s playmaking ability. What Bryant still has to prove this season is that he’s listening to some sort of meditation tapes that will prevent him from throwing a sweaty jersey at his coach (see Bill Parcells incident). If Bryant continues to do all the right things and stay out of trouble – which he has done extremely well so far – he will be rewarded with a lucrative long-term deal.  More – TBO.com

Magic center Gortat set to sign an offer sheet with Mavs

Sentinel Staff Writer

Magic-Celtics

Brian Schmitz

Orlando Magic center Marcin Gortat appears headed to the Dallas Mavericks unless the Magic match an offer to keep the second-year back-up to Dwight Howard.

Gortat has given the Mavs a verbal commitment to sign a offer sheet according to ESPN.com and the Dallas Morning News late Thursday.

Because Gortat is a restricted free agent, the Magic have seven days to match the offer after July 8, the first official day that players can sign contracts with new teams.

The Mavs apparently are offering the 6-11 Gortat the full mid-level exception, starting at $5.6 million, a significant raise from the $770,000 he made last season. Such deals usually run four to six years.

General Manager Otis Smith told the Sentinel on Monday that he would not match an offer for Gortat “north of 5 (million),” although the Magic could go deep into the luxury tax to retain him.

Smith and Gortat’s agent, Guy Zucker, did not immediately return calls on Thursday night. Gortat did not return an e-mail.

Gortat has said he wanted to be a starter, and Zucker has expressed doubt that the Magic would match an offer sheet for a back-up center.

Gortat was scheduled to tour the Mavs’ practice facilities and meet with management in Dallas on Thursday.

Small forward Hedo Turkoglu, who is an unrestricted free agent, is being courted strongly by the Portland Trail Blazers.   More – OrlandoSentinel.com

Leopold joins overhauled defensive unit

Palm Beach Post Wire Servicesflorida panthers

The Florida Panthers lost one defenseman Thursday but added another, signing Jordan Leopold to a one-year contract on the same day that free agent Karlis Skrastins agreed to terms with the Dallas Stars.

Florida acquired the negotiating rights to Leopold when it traded Jay Bouwmeester to Calgary on Saturday but could not sign him before he became a free agent Wednesday. Randy Sexton, the Panthers’ assistant general manager, said the chances of signing Leopold looked remote.

“I’m pumped to get it done,” Sexton said Thursday. “We are absolutely ecstatic to have Jordan in Florida. … I did think it was remote yesterday. That’s one of the interesting things about free agency.”

Leopold, 28, who has been in the NHL for seven seasons and played in 83 games with Colorado and Calgary last season, said there was interest from other teams but “it was a pretty easy decision” to come to Florida.

Leopold has played in 355 games in his NHL career, recording 29 goals, 80 assists and 162 penalty minutes. He was a member of the 2006 U.S. Olympic team and will be reunited in Florida with Keith Ballard, his former teammate at the University of Minnesota.

Skrastins, who spent parts of the past two seasons with the Panthers, was offered a one-year deal by Sexton. Skrastins signed a two-year contract with Dallas.

The Panthers also announced that defenseman Clay Wilson, who played in 14 games during the past two seasons for Columbus and Atlanta, signed a two-year contract. On Wednesday, the team signed defenseman Ville Koistinen, who spent last season with Buffalo.  More – PalmBeachPost.com

Derrick Brooks Still Holding Out Hope

NFL: DEC 21 Chargers at Buccaneers

Posted by Aaron Wilson

The silence has nearly been deafening for veteran linebacker Derrick Brooks.

Ever since being abruptly released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in February as a salary-cap casualty and the victim of a youth movement, Brooks has been earnestly trying to find a new NFL employer.

It’s been quiet, way too quiet for Brooks’ taste.

And the 11-time Pro Bowl selection and former NFL Man of the Year has struggled to land a new job at age 36.

Despite Brooks’ 895 career tackles, 25 interceptions and 13 1/2 sacks in 14 NFL seasons, his underwhelming 2008 season where he didn’t record a sack and registered less than 100 tackles for the first time this decade and his age are apparently working against him.

In an interview with former NFL defensive lineman D’Marco Farr of ESPN Radio St. Louis, via Sportsradiointerviews.com, Brooks made it clear that he’s not giving up.

“There’s enough interest out there from teams for me to keep the fire burning,” Brooks said. “So, I’ll continue to stay in shape and we’ll see what happens.”

Although Brooks was caught off guard when the Buccaneers cut him loose, the former Florida State star says he isn’t harboring any bitterness.

“That’s the business again of the NFL,” Brooks said. “Everybody knows that when you come in and expect anything different, then you’re going to get disappointed. But with me, the news itself, you know I dealt with it for 14 years.

“I just wanted it to happen. It could have been handled a little bit better in my opinion and I would have been ok with that I think. But the news itself, no i had no problem with that.”

Brooks’ name has been mentioned in speculation with at least two teams: the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints

However, nothing tangible seems to be brewing at the moment.  More – ProFootballTalk.com
