Miami Dolphins release six players

Miami Dolphins release six players

By Omar Kelly SunSentinel.com

DAVIE – The Miami Dolphins have released six players who were members of last season’s AFC East Division champs, and placed outside linebacker Matt Roth on the physically unable to perform list.

Moving Roth, who is battling a groin injury, to the PUP creates an extra roster spot until the sixth week of the season.

The most notable cut was receiver Brandon London, one of the team’s top special teams contributors. Also let go was offensive tackle Brandon Frye, defensive end Rodrique Wright, safety Courtney Bryan, cornerback Joey Thomas, and inside linebacker William Kershaw.

Kershaw’s team-leading seven tackles and one sack in Thursday the exhibition season finale against New Orleans wasn’t enough to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster.

The converted inside linebacker who started last season on the practice squad before getting a late call-up, drastically improved this training. But clearly it wasn’t enough to extend his South Florida stay.

Frye, who was claimed off Houston’s practice squad early last season, didn’t make the offensive line cut because the Dolphins kept offensive tackles Nate Garner and Andrew Gardner, the team’s sixth-round pick, instead. Frye played in seven games for the Dolphins in 2008, and was versatile enough to play both guard and tackle.

Wright, the team’s seven-round pick in 2006, had the longest tenure of all the players released. The Dolphins presently plan to keep eight defensive linemen on the 53-man roster, which includes second-year end Lionel Dotson.  More – SunSentinel.com

Raiders cut Jeff Garcia

Raiders cut Jeff Garcia

by Mike Florio ProFootballTalk.com

The plan was for quarterback Jeff Garcia to push starter JaMarcus Russell, the first pick in the 2007 draft, to get better.

Plan B was for Garcia to win the job.

Plan C, as it turns out, was for Garcia to not make the team.

Per a league source, Garcia has been cut.

He had a decent showing in the third preseason game against the Saints, generating a triple-digit passer rating.

If Garcia lands elsewhere, it likely won’t happen until after the first game of the regular season, since his base salary will essentially be guaranteed if he is on a roster as of Week One.  ProFootballTalk.com

Jameel is cooked in Tampa

Jameel is cooked in Tampa

by Gregg Rosenthal ProFootballTalk.com

Being a long-standing member of the Bucs isn’t viewed as a positive around Tampa these days.

According to PFT head honcho Mike Florio, the latest veteran Buccanneer to get cut was fullback Jameel Cook, who has played six of his eight career seasons with the team.

B.J. Askew looks likely to start at fullback for Tampa.  ProFootballTalk.com

Matt Roth placed on reserve/PUP list

Matt Roth placed on reserve/PUP list

by Gregg Rosenthal ProFootballTalk.com

If Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth was a bigger-named player, his mysterious journey during training camp would grown into a major story.

Roth was expected to be a solid starter for the Dolphins this year, but now he won’t hit the field until Week Seven at the earliest.

Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post wrote Saturday morning that Roth was placed on the reserve/PUP list, which means he’s ineligible to practice or play with the team for the first six weeks of the season.

Jason Taylor is going to have a bigger role on the Miami defense than originally expected because of Roth’s injury and Taylor’s solid performance in training camp.  ProFootballTalk.com

Preview capsule: Samford at UCF

Preview capsule: Samford at UCF

by Iliana Limón

•Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. at Bright House Networks Stadium

•Broadcasts: TV — Bright House Sports Network

•Weather: 40 percent rain chance, about 81

Quick slant

The Knights debut their new and improved offense under first-year coordinator Charlie Taaffe. UCF, the overwhelming favorite in this game, needs to make the most of this tune-up because a tough game at Southern Miss is on the horizon.

About Samford

Junior RB Chris Evans, who is on the preseason Walter Payton Award watch list, piled up a Samford record 1,284 yards last year. The team went 6-5 and posted a winning record for the first time since 2003.

About UCF

QBs Rob Calabrese and Brett Hodges both should have plenty of time to show what they can do leading Taaffe’s offense. Coaches also will keep a close eye on true freshmen slated to play, including Jarrett Swaby, Josh Robinson, Kemal Ishmael, A.J. Bouye and Troy Davis.

What to watch

•1. The offensive and defensive lines will set the tone and should dominate Samford.

•2. Look for Brynn Harvey to get the ball early and often, giving the wide receivers more room to operate.

•3. Speedy UCF freshman Quincy McDuffie will start as a kickoff returner and could put on a great show.

The buzz

Samford defensive coordinator Bill D’Ottavio served on the UCF coaching staff from 1999-2003.  OrlandoSentinel.com

Return of the kings

Return of the kings

By Pat Dooley

The hype ends at 7 p.m. today. The chatter turns to cheers, the expectations into the expected.

Florida football is back after an eight-month wait filled with news, celebrations and speculation.

The Gators enter the season ranked No. 1 for the fourth time in school history and as the defending national champs for the third time. This opener is not so much about the opponent – FCS team Charleston Southern – than it is about the team that will run through the tunnel in orange and blue. USA Today oddsmaker Danny Sheridan favors the Gators by 63 points today.

“I love coaching this team,” Florida coach Urban Meyer said.

Meyer enters his fifth season with a fat, new $24 million contract and a bulging roster of talented players. He returns the leaders of both his offense and defense – Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes – and introduces a new group of freshmen to the Gator Nation.  More – Gainesville.com
